Indeed, the concept has often been seen as a panacea for many of the biggest threats to the world such as failed states, terrorism and poverty. In particular, this book focuses on the complexities of implementati<span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">ng<\/span> SSR across the globe and the European Union\u2019s role for the reform of security sectors, including the ones of societal security. As suggested in the title of the book, this involves not only opportunities, but challenges to be overcome as well. There are three core themes <span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">in<\/span> this book: Policy, Policies and Practice. By <span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>presenting the themes in this particular order a greater<span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"> <\/span>appreciation of the influences on the process of SSR, from<span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"> <\/span>conception to implementation<span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">,<\/span> is relayed to the reader. <span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The contributors take stock of SSR as practised in the EU thus far and discuss policies for the future. Moreover, they address respectively the needs for SSR and the status of SSR cooperation programmes in a selection of recipient regions and countries such as the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Sub-Saharan Africa, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau and Afghanistan. <\/span>This volume appeals to audiences interested in the EU as a global actor and the interrelationships between foreign, security, defence and development policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">\u00a0<span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt 65.2pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify; mso-pagination: none\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><em>\u201dWith its focus on understanding and linking policies and practice \u2013 \u2018the politics of SSR\u2019 \u2013 this book makes an important contribution to the process of enhancing international capacity to address SSR challenges. Bringing together key thinkers and doers, it provides a valuable in-depth analysis of SSR<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>experiences and prospects.
